On a very sunny day in May, we headed out to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art to view the Ax·is Mun·di exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Mani Kambo. Bold, symbolic, thought-provoking, and right up our street (because graphic designers do love the language of symbols). Even better when the artist is part of the extended TUC family… a very creative household, with Andrew, our animation and motion designer!
About Ax•is Mun•di
Comprising textiles, sculpture, wood engraving and knotting, Mani explores the inner spirit by drawing on her own personal totemic symbols. The artist’s practice is rooted in her family’s history within a caste system and influenced by her upbringing in a household filled with superstition, prayer and religious ceremony. Through her work, Mani interweaves everyday routines and rituals with tradition, spirituality and mythology to trace the stories and journeys that connect all things.
Not just for art’s sake
In the studio, our Creative Director John Dunne sets the tone in the research phase of our projects, often drawing inspiration from art, fashion, storytelling and subcultures, regardless of the brief.
John says: “It’s a way of thinking that our whole team shares, constantly exploring, researching, and pushing to keep our creative outputs bold and relevant. Our team trip to see Mani’s exhibition was a brilliant affirmer of how symbolism, texture, and storytelling shape the way we create.”
Junior graphic designer, Sian, says: “I LOVE contemporary art, so I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Baltic with the team. After hearing all about Mani’s art through Andrew, it was great to see it all come together in the space. With symbolism being one of the main themes in the exhibition, it got me thinking about the role of symbols in modern-day design. A fab day out and a great boost creatively!”
Lunch at Six, panoramic Quayside views, food approved. Then back to studio, feeling all the better for putting art first!
