Illustrating for the Smart Cities industry

September 29, 2017

The Unknown Creative recently expanded their portfolio, and the scope of their work. They created a range of vibrant, engaging visuals for the Sustainability Standard documents involved in a massive social housing project, based in South America. Engaged by renowned building science centre, BRE (Building Research Establishment), they created the materials required to communicate the value of sustainability to their target audience – 16 Million new homeowners, and their families.

Working for clients, Caixa Bank (the second largest government-owned financial institution in South America), and the United Nations Development Programme,  they incorporated the philosophy of Agenda 2030 into the project. This planet-preserving agenda is the UNDP’s worldwide initiative to end poverty, fight inequalities, and tackle climate change, by encouraging governments to take on board 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Keen for these simple, progressive philosophies to be incorporated into their work – The Unknown Creative were also required to create a short, branded, promotional animation that would further encourage customer involvement.

Shortly after completion of the project, the United Nations Social Housing Sustainability Standard featured in a presentation at the UN House, in Brazil’s capital city, Brasilia. With the project due to be rolled out early in 2018, The Unknown Creative have delivered their first South American brand to market.

With the Urbanscape brand (which The Unknown Creative devised for Knauf) having branched out of Europe and into the Asian and North African markets, there are now original TUC-designed brands working in four continents around the globe. The Urbanscape brand identity and brand guidelines were created in 2012, originally for a green roofing system. The brand has since grown substantially, and successfully, and Urbanscape now provide a range of green, Smart City solutions, including urban landscaping and horticulture.

Working with organisations who transform today’s cities, for tomorrow’s smart residents, is a regular feature of The Unknown Creative’s portfolio. Having worked with Cross River Partnership, on their annual report, a range of immersive, contemporary design cleverly captured the ethos of the multi-partner, capital-city regeneration project.

CRP projects included historically significant sites such as Battersea Power Station, and the Tate Modern. The Unknown Creative’s original artwork for the project encapsulated the heritage of these symbolic land marks and – just like the regeneration of the sites themselves – mixed the old with the new to create a distinct, modern deco style.

Also based in London, The Unknown Creative provided their originality, and quirk, to the Institute for Sustainability, with a range of branded illustrations. Set up to deliver Smart City projects across the UK, and Europe, the Institute for Sustainability were provided with a range of original graphics with which to promote their work. These original images portrayed communities as complex, interconnected systems, while identifying the tools and opportunities available to everyone to counteract environmental challenges.

The Unknown Creative also designed the overarching brand mark for the Smart London Innovation Networks. Created to support the Mayor of London’s (MoL) vision for Smart City innovation, the SLINs are in place to address resource pressures, while creating new economic and research opportunities, in a city expected to exceed 10M people by 2030.

One of the pressures that SLINs will inevitably face is that of clean air, and naturally part of the Mayor of London’s vision is to address this. Organisations working to resolve this, like deliverBEST and ClickCollect London – both of which are supported by MoL and CRP – have also benefited from the work of The Unknown Creative.

For their regular roadshows, exhibitions, and progressive initiatives, a selection of digital and print materials were designed and rolled out, in order to spread the word that a better, cleaner future for all is not just possible, but achievable – and The Unknown Creative have certainly proved that they know how to communicate it.
